Diversity
We believe that a diverse and inclusive learning environment is integral to achieving academic excellence. Sheridan’s commitment to diversity is grounded in our school mission and the principles of progressive education. We offer a curriculum that promotes social justice and challenges prejudice, within a school culture that embraces and celebrates difference. We recognize and value the experiences that diversity of gender, race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, socio-economic class, age and ability within our school community contributes to a Sheridan education. We ultimately strive to prepare our students to understand the nature of a complex world and to thrive in a multicultural global society.
Sheridan was the first school in the DC area to complete the Assessment of Inclusivity and Multiculturalism (AIM). AIM was developed by the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) to help schools promote thoughtful and meaningful growth in the areas of diversity and multiculturalism. The process engaged all members of the school community (students, parents, teachers, staff, administration and trustees) in positive and meaningful dialogue around topics of diversity and inclusivity. Sheridan takes seriously the results and is committed to sustaining and improving the school’s atmosphere.
Four strengths were identified. Sheridan maintains a very healthy school climate and culture by:
- creating a welcoming and open environment;
- teaching core values through the community rule: “We respect ourselves, each other and our environment;”
- respecting everyone as an individual; and
- engaging overall with issues of equity and justice.
Four major areas of concern were identified for immediate, tangible and meaningful action.
The school must:
- first and foremost, diversify the faculty;
- state a commitment towards diversity, multiculturalism and inclusivity in the school mission and policies;
- improve accessibility of buildings to accommodate individuals with physical disabilities; and
- create practical, useable tools for all members of the community for diversity, similar to the concept-based lens used for curriculum.
