Grades K-1

Age Requirements

  • Kindergarten applicants must be five years of age by September 1 of the year they plan to attend.
  • 1st grade applicants must be six years of age by September 1 of the year they plan to attend.

The Application Process includes the following:

  • Submit application  (application must be submitted by January 13, 2012)
  • Submit application fee of $60.00


Student Visit and Parent Interview

After you submit your application, please contact the Admissions Office at 202-362-7900 to schedule your child's visit and your parent interview.

Student Visit
Prospective students will visit in a small group for one hour. The visit is informal and students should dress to play. Visit will include story time, cooperative play and an individual assessment. While the children are visiting, parents will attend a meeting facilitated by a Sheridan parent ambassador.

Parent Interview
The parent interview is an opportunity for you to ask questions about Sheridan, to further inform us about your child, and for us to get to know you. Meetings will be held (beginning in January) on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons and will last approximately 45 minutes.

Teacher Recommendation
One current teacher recommendation is required. Please provide the teacher with a stamped envelope addressed to Sheridan School, Admission Office, as the teacher must submit the recommendation directly to the school.

  • Kindergarten applicants are required to take the WPPSI-III (Wechsler Preschool Primary Scale of Intelligence Test, Third Edition).
  • First grade applicants, depending on their age, are required to take either the WPPSI-III or the WISC-IV (Wechsler Intelligence for Children, Fourth Edition).

A completed file includes: 

  • Application
  • Application Fee
  • WPPSI-III or WISC- IV Test Results
  • Teacher Recommendation
  • Student Visit*
  • Parent Interview*

All file components must be received by January 27, 2012

Student Visit
Children will visit individually or in a small group with their current grade.

They will spend a half or whole day (depending on the grade). The visit will include a group activity and individual assessment in reading, writing and math. Most visits include lunch (provided by Sheridan); please let us know of any food allergies prior to the visit. Due to the length of the visit, parents may drop off and pick up their children.

Parent Interview
The parent interview is an opportunity for you to ask questions about Sheridan, to further inform us about your child, and for us to get to know you. Meetings will be held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons, or the morning of your child's visit, and will last approximately 45 minutes

Testing

  • 2nd through 5th grade applicants are required to take the WISC-IV (Wechsler Intelligence for Children, Fourth Edition).
  • 6th through 8th grade applicants are required to take the Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT) or Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE).

SSAT registration booklets are available in the admission office. You may register with SSAT by calling their customer service office at 609-683-4440 weekdays 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. You can also register online at www.ssat.org. Applicants are urged to take the SSAT in November, December or January. The Sheridan School code for receipt of test scores is 7342.
We prefer the SSAT but will accept ISEE.

Student Writing Sample

  • 4th through 8th grade applicants only: Questions for writing sample are included in the application.
