Coronavirus Closure Information

(Posted 3/12/20) Dear Sheridan Parents,

After thorough review of additional guidance and information from health authorities, we have made the difficult decision to cancel tomorrow’s conferences and close Sheridan through the end of Spring Break. We have tried to make our way through this situation gradually over the week with an eye toward balancing health and learning, but we are concerned that waiting longer to close will limit our ability to respond in the ways that we would like. Please note that child care for tomorrow is also cancelled. 

While we hope that we will be able to return on March 30th as planned, as this week has shown, it is difficult to predict exactly what will happen. The remote learning training for faculty and staff previously scheduled for next Monday is now taking place tomorrow and teachers will be preparing with an eye toward both short-term and longer-term closure. Remote learning for our students will take place Tuesday, March 17, 2020 — Friday, March 20, 2020 and resume after Spring Break, if needed. 

Based on the results of our technology survey, we have decided to provide a Chromebook and charger for at-home use for every student in Grades 3-8. This will allow students to easily access assignments and shared work in a familiar operating environment when needed. As an added bonus, the web filters used by Sheridan will remain active on each laptop, eliminating the potential for misuse. For families in Grades K-2, the computer needs will be minimal and less independent and able to be met through existing technology at home.

To ensure every student has what they need at home to continue their learning, we are asking a parent or caregiver from each Sheridan family to come to Sheridan tomorrow between 3pm-6pm to pick up learning materials prepared by their teachers (ALL GRADES) and their child’s Chromebook and charger (GRADES 3-8). If your child already has their Chromebook at home, please confirm that they also have their charger. If they don’t, be sure to pick one up when you are at school tomorrow afternoon.

Distribution outside of the pickup window tomorrow will be very difficult so we ask that you make every effort possible to come to Sheridan during the designated time. If this poses a significant hardship, please contact Kelly Nelson (Grades K-4) or Jay Briar (Grades 5-8) to determine if alternative arrangements can be made.

Over the next several days, you will receive additional communications that lay out our remote learning plan and the ways that we can work in partnership to continue your child’s learning during our closure, especially if it extends beyond March 30th. These are uncertain times for all of us and I am grateful for your patience and support as we chart the best path for our community.
