Buddy Family Handbook

First and foremost: thank you! By agreeing to be a “Buddy Family,” you have taken on a fun and important responsibility on behalf of the Sheridan community. Each of you has been paired with a new, incoming Sheridan student and their family.

What exactly have you gotten yourselves into? Sheridan Buddy Families are ambassadors to our new Sheridan families and represent one of our best resources for making sure new students and their parents feel welcome, included, and informed about all aspects of our Sheridan community. Sheridan’s teachers, administration and staff work hard to provide our new families with information and answers, but nothing compares to the friendship and guidance of families who have walked this road before.

How to be a “Buddy”

There are no hard and fast rules for how to be a great Buddy Family, but there are a few key things you can do to make the most of this opportunity:

Welcome your buddy family to Sheridan. As soon as you have their contact information, reach out to them, introduce your family, and provide your contact information so they are easily able to reach you.

Make yourself available to answer questions and offer support. The simple act of sharing your own contact information and letting the new family know they can reach out to you with questions or concerns can mean a lot.

Get together with your buddy family. Make a date for a time to meet up as families before this school year ends. Just being able to see a friendly and familiar face around campus once the new school year starts will help make our new families feel they are already a part of the community.

Introduce your buddy families to other friends from Sheridan. Team up with other families for a meet-and- greet/playdate. The whole point is to make our new students and their families feel at home so the more folks they get to know, the better.

Ask your children to make cards or drawings to send to their new Sheridan classmate. Getting mail is always very appreciated!

Stay in touch throughout the year. Plan to check in with your buddy family as the school year progresses. If a Sheridan event is coming up, such as the Fall Fair or teacher conferences, it’s a great opportunity to touch base and let them know what to expect.

Remember: Small gestures mean a lot!

Signature Events and Dates to Remember

These events are great opportunities to connect with your buddy family. Whenever you are attending one of these events (and we hope you are able to attend them all!), please let your buddy family know in advance so they can connect with you while there.

Below is a brief overview of some key Sheridan spring events of which you and your buddy families should be aware. Many of these events are also great opportunities for you to get together with your buddy families on campus. When you talk with your buddy family, provide them with some background on these events so they are prepared and know what to expect when the time comes.
