Volunteer Opportunity Descriptions
Below is a list of specific ways you can get involved at Sheridan. Please indicate your interest in the different opportunities using the form to the left (you can also access the form here).
Admissions: Sheridan enlists parent volunteers to provide additional support for the Admission Office, including serving as Parent Ambassadors at Admissions Open Houses and Information Sessions, facilitating prospective parent meetings during Kindergarten and First Grade playdates, attending recruitment events such as the Black Student Fund and Latino Student Fund Fair, and stuffing information packets and tour folders when needed. (Training provided!)
Auction: Each year, Sheridan comes together as a community for a fun adult-only night out that supports specific school initiatives. It is always a fantastic event for a great cause. We can use help with decor, business solicitations, family solicitations, writing/communications, and more.
Buddy Family Program: Being a “buddy family” means acting as a welcome host to new families. The Buddy Family job involves calling your new family and answering any questions, meeting them at New Parent Dessert, Spring Fling and other spring events, and arranging summer get-togethers. It’s a great way to help a new family and find a new friend yourself!
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee: The Diversity Equity and Inclusion Committee (DEIC) is a parent-led group that supports Sheridan by providing parents with educational opportunities around diversity, equity and inclusion, both inside and outside of Sheridan. This year, the DEIC will offer welcome events for families of students of color and LGBTQ families in the fall and work closely with the administration to support the diversity vision of the school. DEIC strives to be representative across our community in its membership and encourages anyone who is interested in learning more to indicate their interest on the volunteer form.
Fall Book Fair: The annual Fall Book Fair is a festival of reading and literature. The gym is transformed into a bookstore for the students and families. Volunteers are needed for set up, decorating, tear down and assisting with sales.
Fall Fair: The Fall Fair is a fun community event and a wonderful way to get the school year started. Parents can participate in a variety of ways. We need volunteers to help with setup, cleanup and supervision of the games and activities.
Grade Parents: Each year, three parents from each class serve as liaisons between the teachers, parents, Head of School, and the Parents Association. This special job allows you to get to know teachers, your child’s classmates, and other parents. Specific duties vary from grade to grade, but generally expect to help teachers with celebrations, field trips and class activities, serve as the class liaison for the auction and help integrate new students into the class culture with informal get-togethers. Grade parents also help recruit volunteers for school-wide events and serve as important communication liaisons between parents and the school.
Mountain Campus Family Weekend Liaisons: Volunteers in this role serve as hosts during the Fall and Spring Family Weekends, working as a liaison between the school and Camp Horizons and being a resource for families during their time at Mountain Campus.
New Family Liaisons: Each year, we have two parents serve as New Family Liaisons. Their primary goal is to serve as a resource to new families as they transition into the school, helping them understand what to expect throughout the year and answer any questions they may have. In addition, the New Family Liaisons assist the Admissions team with the new family orientation at the beginning of the school year. This role begins in the spring when new families join and serves through the following school year.
Parents Council of Washington Representatives: We are seeking two volunteers to serve as our representatives to the Parents Council of Washington and attend the Council’s programs, which cover a variety of topics (there are usually four programs per year). The Council reps encourage other Sheridan parents to join them in attending and provide a summary of the programs for News and Notes.
Sheridan Run: The Sheridan 5K is our annual event through which we give back to the community by raising funds for a cause selected by our Student Council. Volunteers are needed to help with the logistics of the event and spread the word to the community.
Spring Fling: Spring Fling is a wonderful way to wind up the school year. Parents can participate in a variety of ways. We need co-chairs who can oversee the Fling and coordinate with vendors to offer games, activities and food. We also need volunteers to help with setup, cleanup and supervision of the games and activities.
