On Friday, April 20th, Sheridan students gathered on the turf to mark a day of peace. April 20th was set as a National School Walkout Day in observance of the 19th anniversary of the Columbine shooting. The Young Activist’s club (YA), which formed following the shooting in Parkland, Florida, as a way to fight for school safety and gun control, was eager to mark the day in a way that would allow all students, K-8, to participate. Each class framed the event in an age-appropriate way, ranging from a recognition of the historical events that inspired our actions in the Middle School to a discussion of our wish for peace in the younger grades. Members of the YA club spoke at the start of the event, thanking students for their participation and reminding us all that we must continually work for peace.
