Head of School Announcement

Introducing Courtney Martin

Courtney Martin, New Head of Sheridan School (effective July 1, 2023), introduced herself to our community.

Courtney Martin Named Next Head of Sheridan School

Washington, DC (November 7) – Following a comprehensive and extensive search process including a robust and impressive candidate pool of sitting heads and experienced educators across the country, the Sheridan Head of School Search Committee and Board of Trustees announced today that the next Head of Sheridan School will be Courtney Martin.

As we look to the future of our school, it was clear to us that Courtney’s authentic leadership and exceptional experience as an educator and school administrator made her the right leader to take the helm at this unique point in Sheridan’s history,” said Mari McDonald, Head of School Search Committee Chair and Board of Trustee member.

For five years, Martin served as Lower School Head at the Hawken School outside Cleveland, Ohio where she ran day-to-day operations for a progressive 500-student, K-5 facility on its own campus. For the past two years, she has been the Associate Head of School at Collegiate School in Richmond, Virginia, a JK-12 school with 1,600 students. At Collegiate, she serves as the co-lead for the school’s strategic planning efforts and oversees professional development, recruiting and hiring, and accreditation. Martin began her career as a classroom teacher at St. Stephen’s and St. Agnes School in Alexandria, Virginia among other schools.

Through these experiences, Martin has built extremely deep skills in running daily school operations, assessing and developing curricula, collaborating with boards on governance issues, crafting a vision across constituent groups, supporting student development, strengthening DEI, working with parents, and partnering with faculty and staff as they strive to do their best work with students.

“I am thrilled to join Sheridan and its will be an honor to lead Sheridan into our next chapter,” Martin said. “School has always played an important role in my life and I look forward to bringing my devotion, commitment, and love of learning to Sheridan.”

Martin will join a strong senior leadership team and an engaged Board of Trustees. She is already in regular communication with current Head of School Jessica Donovan, and Sheridan’s Board of Trustees. Martin will visit Sheridan several times between now and her formal start date of July 1, 2023 to get to know the entire Sheridan community better.
